Community Gardens

Lakeside Community Garden has a variety of projects including individual gardening plots, a large donation garden, a pumpkin patch, a garlic field, and a new native species/butterfly garden.

Robinson Community Garden is an idea brought to life by the joint efforts of business owner Bernie Robinson, Judge Brian Abrams and the Salvation Army. Robinson Community Garden is two acres of donated farmland -- seeded, tended, worked and harvested by volunteers to provide our Community Partners with healthy, nutritious food to distribute to those in need in the Kingston area.

Markets

Community Harvest Kingston’s (CHK) goals are to increase access to local, healthy food; provide education on the benefits of eating a healthy diet and to build community.

The Kingston Public Market is the oldest market in Ontario and has been providing food and a sense of community to residents of Kingston since 1801.

The Memorial Centre Farmers Market was founded in 2012 by five local farmers looking to increase access to local food and bring new life to the Kingston Memorial Centre grounds.

Processors

Using traditional old world methods and 100% natural unpasteurized sheep’s milk, each cheese is made by hand in very small batches and then carefully tended to and aged from two to nine months.

Original founders of the beloved Chez Piggy Restaurant, Rose Richardson & Zalman Yanovsky, wanted to open a small bakery to provide hand-made bread that would sufficiently complement their restaurant’s menu. From that small seed, grew Pan Chancho Bakery & Cafe ~ a dazzling European style bakery, a gourmet food shop and a dine in cafe.

Time and Quality ingredients. Beginning with our starters and wild sourdough, we appreciate how long slow fermentation improves the taste, texture and digestibility of our bread.  Almost all of our dough is fermented a minimum of 18 hours. Since 2014 we have built our whole wheat, rye and oat breads on the fabulous grain provided to us by Chris and Mary of Ironwood Organics.

Established in 1867, The Wilton Cheese Factory operated as a Farmer’s Cooperative until it was purchased by the Jensen family in the 1970s. One of the stipulations of the purchase was that the factory maintain its original name and the Jensen family honoured that request. The Wilton Cheese Factory and Jensen Cheese are divisions of A.M. Jensen Limited. A.M.

All bread is 100% hand made using a no knead technique, which allows for a longer and proper fermentation, ultimately leading to better and easier to digest bread.

Roots Down Organic Farm was started in 2005 by Jeff and Sue Klug. The Farm is located north of Gananoque, near Seeley’s Bay, in the heart of the Frontenac Arch Biosphere. Here, five eco-regions merge with the highest per acre biodiversity in all of Canada.

From May to October we operate a small market at our farm gate. Only 5 kilometres east of downtown Kingston, it is a handy spot to get fresh picked veggies, corn, maple syrup and free range eggs.

It is our goal on Sonset Farm to create a sustainable agricultural system. We farm with daily consciousness of the interconnectedness of plants, animals and human beings.
